EGRET
A 44' Sharpie Ketch for fibreglass construction
Brewer Design #201

EGRET is a modified sharpie ketch of modern cored fibreglass construction on bulkhead framing. While we recommend a rigid foam core, such as Core-Cell, a light strip planked wood core, or even plywood, is quite suitable for her construction as well.

EGRET's hull is that of a Rosslyn sharpie, with flat bottom amidships and increasing deadrise, or vee, towards the bow and stern.

Her very low displacement/length ratio and moderate beam assure that she will be easily driven under both sail and power. Unlike most sharpies, EGRET has a salient keel that will allow her to sail reasonably even with the centerboards raised. The keel also allows the ballast to be fitted much lower than in the usual sharpie and this substantially enhances her stability.

With her ketch sail plan and tandem centerboards, EGRET will balance under a wide variety of reduced rig combinations. Her generous sail area assures good performance in a versatile rig and she can be set up with a self tending staysail if preferred.

The center cockpit layout features a large galley, roomy head with stall shower, two separate sleeping cabins and a comfortably large saloon. There is generous stowage throughout, of course. The spacious engine room will be envied by many owners of auxiliary yachts and can accommodate diesels of 25 to 70 hp to suit the owner's needs. Wheel steering is cable operated and a partly balanced rudder eases the loads.

All in all, EGRET is a very practical yacht for the type of cruising that most of us do. He shoal draft opens many remote areas to her skipper and crew so she will be at home anywhere in our coastal waters, shoal or deep, and she is quite capable of blue water passages when desired.
