CENTENNIAL
A 34' Sharpie Ketch for fibreglass construction
Brewer Design #126

CENTENNIAL is a fast, modern sharpie yacht with traditional appearance. Her arc bottom hull allows sufficient displacement for cruising accommodations and gear without an undue increase in wetted surface and the raised deck style assures maximum room below decks.

The first boat was fitted with leeboards at the owner's request and has proven to be very successful indeed. Sufficient to say that the original owner's still had the boat 20 years later! However a centerboard version is also available for those who prefer.

The first boat was gaff rigged and has proven to be an excellent performer. The sail area/displacement ratio is high and with her long waterline, lean hull and light displacement she can achieve very good speeds in a breeze. In light weather it is simple to add another 230 sq. ft. of sail with her main topsail and mizzen staysail and get along well in any airs above a zephyr. A Marconi sail plan is available also and, while not as picturesque, it does have fewer strings to pull! Auxiliary power is by a 9.9-15 hp. outboard in a well and moves her quite nicely through the calms.

The hull is of cored fiberglass construction using foam, balsa or plywood core, as preferred. It is well within the ability of an amateur builder or a small shop and assures a stiff, strong one piece structure.

The accommodations are simple but provide 2 permanent berths, 2 settee berths, a small head and a workable galley. The cockpit is roomy and the flush decks offer a comfortable working platform for sail handling.

CENTENNIAL is not everyone's idea of the perfect yacht but for coastal cruising in shoal water areas the sharpie is hard to beat. CENTENNIAL is a rather unique sharpie and she attracts her share of attention wherever she pokes her bowsprit.
